Why study German | German Faculty | BA in German | German Minor | Elementary German Language Sequence | Study Abroad

Study Abroad

There is no better way to improve language skills than studying abroad. Spending a year or a semester abroad is highly recommended for students interested in majoring in German. Besides being able to speak German every day, students can experience the German culture first hand. Since Germany is in the center of Western Europe, students studying abroad in Germany can easily plan weekend trips to bordering countries such as France, Austria, Poland, Denmark and many more. Your German experience can become an international one.

The MU International Center and the Department of German and Russian Studies offer a variety of programs for students to study abroad. What follows is a list of programs MU offers, along with requirements you would need to meet.

I. Germany in the Summer for all language levels

(Without previous knowledge of German up to advanced knowledge)

Philipps-Universität Marburg

Founded in 1527, the University in Marburg is the oldest Protestant university in Germany. With 16 different faculties, Marburg offers a wide variety of research possibilities. With a castle and a large part of the historic city, Marburg offers a romantic atmosphere in the heart of the federal state Hessen.

The summer university program is perfect for students with different language skills. For beginners with no previous knowledge, Marburg offers a beginners class. Students who arrive in Marburg with language skills take a language test to be placed in the right class. Besides the everyday language class, students are offered regular credit classes on European issues from the fields of politics, literature, culture, media and economics. The students can choose from courses taught in English, German or Russian. These courses generally will count towards MU’s General Education requirements or for the major or minor in German.

Freie Universität Berlin - FUBiS

Germany’s capital, Berlin, is a growing and blossoming European metropolis. It was destroyed during WWII, separated for decades (die Berliner Mauer), and finally united in 1990. Berlin is more than just a city; it is a historical eyewitness. The streets of Berlin can tell stories about war and destruction but also about peace and unification. Similar to the program in Marburg, FUBiS offers summer classes for international students with different language skills. The classes are taught in English or German by distinguished German and international faculty. FUBiS offers an intensive, academic program through which students can earn credits that may be counted toward their degrees at their home institutions. FUBiS sessions run for 4 to 6 weeks and take place in both summer and winter. MU does not have a formal agreement with FUBiS but students have gone in the past and signed up on their own arranging credit transfers before going.

II. Germany for a Semester or up to a Year

(For students with advanced language skills)

MU offers 4 different programs for students who want to study abroad for a semester or up to a year. While MU students can study in Tübingen, Saarbrücken or Stuttgart in the spring semester or for a whole year, the University of Bonn offers the choice between a spring or fall semester, and a full year.

A semester up to a year is especially tempting for students who want to improve their German on an academic level, too. Besides intensive language training, students can experience German classroom culture, seminars and lectures. They will live and study in a German environment and, as this option is a step above a summer program, students will learn and practice German on an everyday basis. Students with excellent academic performance who consider studying in Germany for a semester of a full academic year should apply for scholarships through the Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst (DAAD), the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CDS), Fulbright, or others (see the MU International Center).

IV. Deutsche Sommerschulen in USA

An excellent way to be totally immersed into the language and culture is participation in one of the several summer institutes in the US. Usually that involves a commitment of not speaking English for 4-6 weeks while living with a group of students and faculty and taking classes for credit.
